Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Referrals

So, you’ve probably just come from your doctor’s office and found out you’re on an EPC plan through Medicare. This usually happens when you have a chronic condition that requires ongoing treatment like physiotherapy or podiatry. In Australia, EPC referrals are a way for doctors to recommend other specialists to their patients.

What is a Medicare EPC Plan?

EPC stands for Enhanced Primary Care, and it’s a system that allows you to see specialists at a subsidised cost. Your GP will assess your needs and if they think you could benefit from seeing a specialist like a podiatrist or occupational therapist, they’ll write you a referral. You can then take this referral to the specialist, who will claim your Medicare rebate on the spot.

The best part about EPC referrals is that you have the freedom to choose which specialist you want to see, as long as they participate in the scheme.
